Have modern Unix operating systems built some kind of security to avoid the removal of the root directory accidently? I am too scared to run it in terminal but I just want to know, what would happen.

This is where something like docker comes in handy! Fire up an ubuntu docker image login and try it out. Let's us know what happens ;)
